May 25th marks National Wine Day, where we can all celebrate our favourite drink with a glass or two! While you may not need an excuse to drink wine on this day, here are 6 of the best reasons why you should!

While wine may not be great for your memory while you are drinking it (or the morning after!), in the long run, wine can prove beneficial to your memory. A substance found in red wine, called resveratrol, has been shown to boost the amount of brain connections made, which can lead to improved memory. Further to this, several studies have suggested that red wine can stimulate the brain enough to help combat the onset of dementia. Of course, this is only the case if you drink in moderation!
It Can Help You Lose Weight
Usually, wine is associated with gaining weight, rather than being known as a dieting option, but research suggests that red wine can help shift some pounds. This is again down to the substance known as reservatrol, which can help to convert flab into a calorie-burning fat. Wine certainly proves better for your weight than other alcohol types as well. Those who drink wine on a daily basis can be seen to have a lower body mass, a smaller waist and less fat in the tummy area than those who drink liquor.

Wine is packed full of antioxidants, some of which are capable of raising the levels of good cholesterol in your blood, as well as lowering the amount of bad cholesterol. Wine, therefore, acts as a two-fold aid to your cholesterol levels, helping to keep your heart happy!

Wine can boost longevity; letting you live longer, and look younger! On average, wine drinkers live for longer and stay younger looking. It certainly worked for Antonio Docampo Garcia, a Spanish vineyard owner, who died a couple of years ago aged 107! He attributed his longevity to drinking a whopping four bottles of red wine each day; two at lunch and two at dinner! Wine lovers are also found to have around 40 percent more antioxidants in their bodies in comparison to non-drinkers, which help to prevent cell ageing! The miracle substance reservatrol triggers anti-ageing enzyme in your body that are responsible for DNA repair and other essential processes, meaning it can even help to smooth out wrinkles!
Drinking wine has been found to help reduce the effects of UV rays, helping to protect you from bad sunburn in the summer. The flavonoids found in wine stop the reactive skin cells that feel pain from sunburn from reacting when exposed to UV rays, resulting in a less painful tanning time! Suncream is obviously the best preventative measure for sunburn, but it’s always good to have an excuse to drink more wine!

While unfortunately, this one doesn’t involve drinking wine, it may well provide you with some extra cash to buy yourself a bottle or two! In recent years, wine has really taken off as an investment opportunity, rapidly becoming one surefire way to make a fortune. Over the past decade, the price of wine bought as an investment opportunity has risen by 243 percent! So if you have a vintage bottle hidden in your wine cellar, you might be making some money!
