Comfort wines for unprecedented times by Kirsty Woodgate

Kirsty Woodgate, DipWSET Candidate @KirstyWineKnott

If you are craving a little comfort during these trying times, I am here for you. I have put together a list of my favourite comfort blanket wines to wrap you up. They can also all be delivered contact-free. So, light the candles, grab a book or put something good on Netflix, to settle in with one of these splendours because staying in, is the new going out.

1 – Anwilka, Stellenbosch, South Africa £24

Let us start with this sumptuous blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm melty mocha concentrated dark chocolate and a rich black forest gateau sing from this glass. I recommend decanting it before sipping slowly and savouring.

2 – Phantom, Bogle Winery, California USA £19.99 - £23.95

This wine is made from Petite Syrah, but despite the small name it’s a BIG wine. Cloves muddled with black fruit and coconut are packed into this bottle, which really opens up after 24 hours. It is also said Petite Syrah has high levels of antioxidants so you can claim there’s a health reason for a sip….

3 – Chateau Musar 2002, Gaston Hochar, Lebanon £28

This exotic, velvety wine is surprisingly affordable for its age – a Bordeaux equivalent would command a much higher price, but the quality is comparable. Slightly nutty notes with so so soft delicious tannins, all underpinned with roasted cherries. The alcohol has a bit of a kick but is still beautifully balanced. A real treat to try something this old, ‘just because’.

4 – Orin Swift Abstract, California USA £36.95 - £46.95

Orin Swift’s labels are daring and distinguishable, and this cult US producer knows how to make a wine that packs a punch. This wine has a nostalgic 90s feel about it, a silky jam tart that will improve with age. I would recommend pairing this wine with a hearty meal.

5 – Ramon Bilbao Rioja Edicion Limitada, Spain £15.50

A comforting, classic Rioja. The oak ageing gives this wine reassuringly familiar vanilla and cocoa notes to remind you some things in the world remain the same.

6 – The Gypsy, Ken Forrester, South Africa £32 - £34.95

This is a wine from a famous South African wine producer – Ken Forrester. It has a real earthy nose - imagine yourself walking through the forest after the rain. Wild, brambly scents will engulf you as soft red fruit lingers on your palate. Enjoy this GSM blend and remember the times we could walk freely in the woods with friends and family – and look forward to when can do so again.
